X-COUNTRY ** Instructor Q & A

Interested in becoming a x-country ski instructor?

Have you ever thought about becoming a HPSC x-country ski instructor but weren’t sure what was involved? Read on! Here is some information that should help. This Q & A was developed by instructor trainees who have recently become instructors.

Q. What are the advantages of being a x-country ski instructor?

A. There are many advantages. For example:
        - it is a great way to improve your skiing
        - bus trips and trail fees are free
        - you receive a small stipend every time you teach
        - it provides you with an opportunity to help others
        - you get to meet other club members who share your passion.

Q. How strong a skier do I need to be?

A. If you are a “Silver” level skier in Classic, or a Silver-level skier in both Classic and Skate, you are a candidate. Talk to one of HPSC’s x-country instructors about signing up for our Instructor Development Group training. This will provide you with the technical skills that you need to prepare for the CANSI Level 1 certification.

Q. What is CANSI?

A. CANSI stands for the Canadian Association of Nordic Ski Instructors. This is the group that sets the qualification standards for nordic (x-country) ski instructors in Canada. To become an instructor you need a Level 1 certification (there are four levels). With a Level 1 you are qualified to instruct beginners. You can obtain a Level 1 for Classic only, or Classic and Skate.

Q. When can I take my CANSI Level 1 certification?

A. This two-day course is usually offered two or three times over the winter in different parts of Ontario. Visit the CANSI website:
www.cansi.ca  for more detailed information.

Q. How much does it cost to take the CANSI Level 1 course?

A. It costs approximately $350. This does not include your accommodation, food or trail ticket. However, if you pass the course, and if you become a HPSC instructor, the club will reimburse you over a three-year period for the cost of the course.

Q. How often do I have to teach as a HPSC x-country instructor?

A. It will vary depending on the number of ski instructors available. Generally, you will be asked to teach approximately 8-10 days. You will be able to indicate your preferred dates.

Q. What would a typical ski day look like for an instructor?

A. Once you are on the ski bus the “Director of the Day” – a position all instructors assume on a rotational basis – will assign you a number of members who have signed up for instruction. This number will vary depending on how many instructors are available that day and how many members are requesting lessons. Lessons usually start 45 minutes after the bus arrives at the resort. The actual lesson lasts approximately 90 minutes. At the end of the lesson you will collect the membership cards of your students and indicate the skills they have learned. You will return these cards during lunch and provide feedback to students in the lodge. That’s it! The rest of the day you can ski on your own.

Q. Who should I contact if I am interested in becoming a HPSC x-country ski instructor?

A. Speak to any instructor or send an email to:
xcskischool@highparkskiclub.com
